Today the world is facing the largest refugee crisis since World War II – and the global exodus keeps increasing with over 65 million people classified as refugees. Many of them have fled for their lives, and countless numbers have died on their journey. The response of the international community – or lack of response – is a far cry from the liberal, enlightened internationalism of the period following the Second World War.
At this Club event, International Rescue Committee President and CEO David Miliband will discuss the duty of rescue and what it says about us as a society. Can we move beyond seeing refugees as a burden and empower them to help themselves and contribute to their societies? Has the U.S. vetting process been working, or is it too restrictive and thus counter-productive? How should we as individuals, communities, businesses, and nations respond to the crisis of our time? What can be done to address these important questions?
