Scaling is referred to as cleaning of soft plaque, hard tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth surface.it relieves the gum to stay healthy and firm.
Polishing means to smoothen the rough teeth surface by a medicated polishing paste, which is applied after scaling.
There are two types of scaling usually done in daily practice-
Supragingival scaling: Removal of plaque, tartar and stains above the gum line or neck of the teeth. The soft plaque forms by the consumption of sweet, sticky and acidic foods, use of tobacco, smoking and sticks to the teeth and stays if not properly cleaned. When plaque stays for longer duration it converts into calculus and hardens, which irritates the surrounding gums.
Sub-gingival scaling: Removal of plaque and tartar below the gum & bacterial infection in GUM Disease. Gum disease is a term where your gum starts bleeding, bad breathe,& swelling in a particular time if cleaning is not done, it’s a high chance that your teeth can start loosening there bone support and can ends up in tooth loss.
Procedure: Scaling is done under local anesthesia also application of soothing anesthetic gel for the comfort of patients.
When to follow up?: A healthy individual can go for scaling once in a year,& for a person having underlying medical conditions should visit their dentist after every 6 months of time
